April 30th Edward Colston

April 30th   Edward Colston

You from the past who were extolled.

As men of vision and power, so we were told.

Brought finance, trade and industry made…

You rich.

But what price did you pay?

For your mansion estates, lands and gold?

Titles and honours bestowed of old.

Are you worthy?

Of historic fame? Or shame?

Bronze statue acclaim.

Slaves of the past,

Heads bowed as you passed.

They had little chance.

Workers in pittance paid, in field and mill.

Women and children living in squalid conditions, but you will

Be remembered still.

History knows you.

We will teach the truth.

Tear not down the statues.

We must educate and learn.

And progress.

Ensure...

Times and attitudes do change for the good

And the past is not reviled but it is understood.
